Yes, I recommend a heater for almost every Betta aquarium. Domestic Betta splendens is a tropical fish, and I aim to keep mine at roughly 25–27°C (77–81°F). Even if your house feels warm, an aquarium can cool considerably overnight. A thermostatically controlled heater helps prevent those repeated temperature swings.

Bettas are frequently sold in small cups or bowls, which has helped create the impression that they are somehow different from other tropical fish. Put one beside a row of heated tropical aquariums in a shop and it is easy to see how the misconception starts: the Betta looks perfectly alive in its little container, so surely it cannot need much warmth.
The problem is that surviving a situation for a while and being kept in conditions that allow a fish to thrive are two very different things.
Bettas come from warm parts of Southeast Asia. The domestic fish we keep today have been selectively bred for generations, but they have not suddenly become cold-water fish. In a normal home, a small aquarium left to follow room temperature can be warmer in the afternoon, several degrees cooler by morning and then warm again later in the day.
That repeated rise and fall is the main reason I use heaters. I am not trying to cook the tank. I am trying to make it boringly stable.
I would rather see a Betta held steadily at a sensible temperature than a keeper constantly adjusting the heater because the thermometer has moved by half a degree. Once the aquarium is comfortably warm and stable, leave it alone and let the thermostat do its job.

What Temperature Should a Betta Tank Be?
For most domestic Bettas, I am comfortable aiming for roughly 25–27°C (77–81°F). You will see slightly different figures quoted by different keepers, shops and care sheets, and that is perfectly normal. Fishkeeping rarely gives us one magic number where everything on one side is safe and everything on the other side is dangerous.
What matters is that the fish is kept in an appropriate tropical range and that the temperature does not swing wildly from one part of the day to another.
If my Betta tank is sitting steadily at 26°C, I am happy. I am not going to start fiddling with the heater because somebody online insists that 26.5°C is somehow the perfect number.
Why stability matters
Water changes temperature more slowly than air, but small aquariums can still respond noticeably to room temperature. A tank beside a cold window, in a conservatory or in a room where the central heating goes off overnight may cool more than you expect.
That is particularly relevant to Bettas because many are kept in relatively modest aquariums. The less water there is, the less thermal mass you have buffering the fish from changes around it.
Do Bettas Need a Heater If the House Is Warm?
Sometimes this question is really asking, “My house is 24°C, so can I save myself the trouble of buying a heater?”
Possibly — but measure the aquarium before deciding.
The temperature shown on a wall thermostat tells you the air temperature at or near that thermostat. It does not tell you what the water in a small aquarium is doing at 4 a.m. The room may also be cooler near an outside wall, window or floor.
If your aquarium genuinely remains within an appropriate range all day, every day and throughout the seasons, then the heater may hardly switch on. That is fine. A thermostatically controlled heater does not continuously heat the water simply because it is plugged in; it should switch on when needed and off when the set temperature is reached.
For that reason, I still prefer having one installed. It acts more like insurance against a temperature drop than something that must run twenty-four hours a day.
Put a thermometer in the aquarium and check the water itself, including first thing in the morning. That one measurement is far more useful than assuming the tank must be warm because the room feels comfortable.
What Happens If a Betta Gets Too Cold?
Fish are ectothermic, which means their body temperature is strongly influenced by the water around them. Temperature therefore affects much more than whether the fish feels “cold” in the way we might.
A Betta kept below a suitable temperature may become less active. It may spend more time resting, show less enthusiasm for food or simply look as though it has lost some of its usual spark.
The important point is that none of those signs proves the aquarium is too cold. Lethargy and loss of appetite can have many causes. That is why I always come back to the thermometer.
If a normally active Betta suddenly becomes quiet, I would check temperature and water quality before inventing a complicated diagnosis.
Common signs worth investigating
- the Betta is noticeably less active than usual;
- it spends far more time resting;
- feeding response becomes weaker;
- the fish appears sluggish first thing in the morning;
- the thermometer shows repeated overnight drops.
Again, these are reasons to investigate, not a diagnosis by themselves.
Can Betta Water Be Too Warm?
Absolutely. More heat is not automatically better.
Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cooler water, and high temperature also affects a fish's metabolism. There is no reason to keep turning the heater upwards in the hope of creating an extra-happy Betta.
During very hot weather, the aquarium can also become warmer than the heater setting because the surrounding room is heating the water. At that point the heater should simply remain off, but you still need to keep an eye on the thermometer.
If the tank becomes excessively warm, avoid drastic attempts to cool it quickly. Stability still matters. Increasing surface movement, reducing unnecessary heat from lighting and cooling the room itself are generally gentler approaches than creating a sudden temperature drop inside the aquarium.
What Size Heater Does a Betta Need?
Heater size is usually expressed in watts. You will often see a rough guideline of around 3–5 watts per US gallon for a typical indoor aquarium, and that is a useful starting point rather than an absolute rule.
The correct size depends on three things:
- the volume of the aquarium;
- how much warmer you need the water than the surrounding room;
- the recommendations of the heater manufacturer.
A 5-gallon Betta tank in a centrally heated living room does not have the same heating requirement as a 5-gallon tank in a cold outbuilding.
I would therefore use the manufacturer's sizing chart as the final guide rather than buying purely on a watts-per-gallon formula.
Typical starting points
For the small aquariums commonly used for single Bettas, heaters around 25–50 watts are common, but there is no prize for choosing the biggest heater you can fit in the tank. What you want is an appropriately sized unit capable of maintaining the temperature without being absurdly oversized.
Given the choice, I prefer a heater with a proper thermostat and adjustable temperature control over the cheapest fixed-temperature mini heater. A preset unit can work, but being able to see and control what you are asking the heater to do is useful.
Do You Need a Thermometer as Well as a Heater?
Yes. I consider the thermometer and heater two separate pieces of equipment.
The heater's setting tells you what the thermostat is supposed to be doing. The thermometer tells you what the aquarium water is actually doing.
Heaters can fail. Dials can be inaccurate. A heater set to 26°C may maintain one aquarium a little above that and another a little below it. Once you know how a particular heater behaves, this is usually no problem at all.
A simple aquarium thermometer is inexpensive, and it removes the guesswork.
Where Should You Put the Heater?
Follow the heater manufacturer's instructions first, because not every model is designed to be positioned in exactly the same way.
In general, I want some water movement around the heater so the warmth is distributed through the aquarium rather than creating a small warm pocket beside the glass. Placing it reasonably close to gentle filter flow often works well.
Bettas do not appreciate strong current, so do not increase the filter flow simply to move heat around. Sensible circulation is enough.
What About Temperature During Water Changes?
This is an easy place to create a temperature swing without meaning to.
If you remove part of the warm aquarium water and replace it with much colder tap water, the tank temperature can fall quickly. I try to make replacement water reasonably close to the aquarium temperature before adding it.
It does not need to be matched to the tenth of a degree. Again, we are aiming for sensible consistency, not laboratory precision.
Many aquarium heaters must remain submerged while operating. During a water change, switch equipment off when required by the manufacturer's instructions and allow the heater to cool before exposing it to air. A hot glass heater suddenly exposed to cooler air or water can be damaged.
Can a Betta Ever Be Kept Without a Heater?
Yes, but I think this answer gets misunderstood.
A heater is a tool for maintaining temperature. If an aquarium is already sitting at an appropriate, genuinely stable temperature around the clock, a heater has little work to do.
Someone living in a consistently warm tropical climate may find that their aquarium never drops out of a good range. The same may be true in a dedicated heated fish room.
But that is very different from saying “Bettas don't need heaters”.
What Bettas need is warm, stable water. In most ordinary homes, a heater is simply the easiest and most reliable way of providing it.
What I Would Look for When Buying a Betta Heater
I do not think you need anything exotic. For a normal Betta aquarium, I would look for:
- an aquarium heater from a reputable manufacturer;
- the correct wattage for the tank and room conditions;
- a built-in thermostat;
- adjustable temperature control if budget allows;
- clear minimum-water-level or submersion markings;
- a separate thermometer for checking the result.
I would also read the instructions. That sounds obvious, but heater designs vary. Some can be fully submerged, some have positioning restrictions and some need to remain switched off for a short period before or after water changes.
The Bottom Line
Bettas are hardy enough to tolerate imperfect conditions for a while, which is probably one reason so many poor care practices have followed them around for decades.
I would not use that hardiness as an excuse to keep one cold.
For most Betta keepers, the solution is simple: use a suitably sized thermostatic heater, keep the aquarium around 25–27°C (77–81°F), check it with a thermometer and then stop worrying about tiny fluctuations.
